This German word, often appearing in the uppercase, means “the spirit of the times” or “the general intellectual or temper characteristic of a particular period of time.” These days, it’s perfectly acceptable to write the word in the lowercase. Here it appears in the Chicago Sun-Times:

As most critics and all professors of cultural theory note, Madonna is nothing if not a skilled reader of the zeitgeist. -- "Techno 'rave' just the same old Madonna," Chicago Sun-Times, March 3, 1998.
