Amber and Miss Hamrick also wanted to further describe the adjectives they used to modify nouns. Not content with saying The sunset is beautiful, they became grandiose and said The sunset is unbelievably beautiful. Thus, they developed the rule that adverbs can modify adjectives. Then it dawned on them that they might want to further describe the adverbs themselves. So instead of saying Igor ran quickly, they upped the ante and said Igor ran very quickly. Check out very in the dictionary, and you’ll see that it’s an adverb.
