Reading is the fastest way to improve your English. And to test your comprehension of a book you read, you might try writing what's called a "book report." Throughout school, from the earliest grades, students must learn to write a book report, and many find the task quite nerve-racking. But a few guidelines can help any student through the process of writing a good book report.
Step number one, of course, is to select a book to read. It makes sense to read something you enjoy. Your school teacher might list several types of books. We often refer to a type of book as a "genre." Several come to mind:
autobiography
science fiction
nonfiction
adventure
biography
romance
mystery
fantasy
fiction
Step number two sounds easy, but students often "fudge" this step: Read the book. Skimming through the book, or reading some other book report on the book will not give you the understanding necessary to write a good book report. So read it.
After you read the book, it's time to decide on a title of your book report. Your title of choice could include the actual title of the book. If you prefer not to use the actual title of the book, make up an appropriate title. For example: Instead of using the actual title "Wuthering Heights" you could make up a title: 'A Reflection on the Relationship Between Kathy and Heathcliff." Such a title for your book report would immediately indicate that you have a good comprehension of the novel.
To start your book report, you need to write an introductory paragraph. A book report should give an indication of what kind of story you are reviewing. Is it poignant, frightening, humorous, thrilling, etc? A good way to grab the attention of the reader is to begin with a question. For example: Did Kathy truly love Heathcliff?
Next, you need to condense or summarize the plot. Introduce the names of the main characters in the story and also give some information on them when you write. A book report should outline only the main points of the story. Readers are most often intrigued by the trials and tribulations of the characters, so reveal them when you write a book report. On the other hand, do not include the ending of the book.
You should also write a paragraph that gives your personal view. When you write a book report, include what you liked about the story and give your preferred part. Perhaps you could explain what you learned from reading the book. In conclusion, tell the reader if you personally recommend the book; include your reasons for your opinion in writing. Finally, before giving your book report to your teacher, reread it several times, making sure your grammar and your spelling are completely correct.
