Numbers in Lists Within Text

  edgood  —  Grammar Tips
Use parentheses to enclose numerals or letters marking divisions or enumerations within the text of your writing. Remember, in indented and vertical lists, the period sets off the number or letter:
He discovered the various abuses in (1) recruiting, (2) scholarships, (3) testing, and (4) summer employment.

When you create a listing in text, be sure (a) to enclose the number or letter in parentheses, (b) to separate each item with a comma, and (c) to precede the last item with a conjunction.
