A German word, often appearing in the uppercase, which means “the spirit of the times” or “the general intellectual or temper characteristic of a particular period of time.” These days, it’s perfectly acceptable to write the word in the lowercase.
As most critics and all professors of cultural theory note, Madonna is nothing if not a skilled reader of the zeitgeist.
