Introduction
Top writers do not use the semicolon as much today as they did in the past. As a matter of style, you should try to avoid using too many sentences consisting of two independent clauses joined by a semicolon. The mark does have its uses, however, and when you do join two independent clauses without a conjunction, you must use the semicolon (or a colon).
