At school, we learn a foreign language for several years, in most cases, because of the academic program. For our age and brief life experience, we underestimate the importance of knowing a different language and speaking fluently in it. Following graduation, many of us get a job. Since most countries are multi-ethnic, the probability of meeting foreigners in your native city is very high. That is when you regret missing your German lessons and your lack of foresight.
Patience and hard work, with a few months of activity surrounded by foreign people, will bear fruit, and you will speak the preferred language if you want to. Is it worth studying foreign languages? Yes! There are various reasons to do so. In this article, I have tried to list the most important among them.
Study and get a residence permit abroad
Do you know that since the 2014/2015 academic year, higher education in Germany is free for everyone, including international students? Did you know that some programs can be taught in German? Or that French universities have free programs that you can enter without taking entrance exams? Some Dutch universities grant grants that fully cover the cost of an MA degree. We can continue this list for a long time since, in Europe, there are now many opportunities to get a fairly high-quality higher education for free or a moderate fee. Why not use the chance and spend some semesters studying?
When you learn a language, you understand well the country where it is used for communicating. The better you distinguish the country's language, history, and culture, the more likely you are to assess whether moving to this country is appropriate in your case. If you move, the easier it will be for you to find the best way to get a residence permit. If you are moving after someone from your family, for instance, because your partner was offered a suitable job in a region whose language you do not know, then you should start learning it as soon as possible, without waiting for the move. Even a mediocre command of the language will ease your life and mitigate the inevitable culture shock.
An opportunity to meet interesting people
Learning a new language is a brilliant chance to find friends with whom you would not otherwise have — in the truest sense of the word – a common language. You will inevitably meet different people. These people learn the language with you, your teachers, professors, and those with whom you interact on various online resources dedicated to learning. Academic experts can help you with an essay. Moreover, you are much more likely to travel, and any trip is always a new meeting. Do not forget about the romantic interest—the chance to meet your soulmate increases because the circle of communication significantly expands.
Language is the most reliable key to another culture. We live in a global technological world that is rapidly becoming smaller and smaller, and the ability to understand people belonging to another culture is becoming a vital necessity. People tend to be scared of what they do not know. The better you get to know the lifestyle and values of other people, the more obvious it becomes that the differences between people are not as great as it may seem at first glance.
A vast selection of books, periodicals, films, and training courses in foreign languages
Do not forget that the 21st century is the age of education, including continuous self-education. Not all books worth reading have translations into your language. It is worth reading in the original. As an experiment, try reading the book and the translated version of it — there will be two completely different books! Many movies and TV series make a much better impression when viewed in the original language.
Besides, a huge number of periodicals in various languages, both large national and small, highly specialized, are now available for free on the Internet. If you speak English well, compare the major news of the same day in, say, a major British, American, Russian, Indian, and Australian newspaper.
Most likely, it will surprise you at how differently they offer a picture of the world. It's not even a matter of how a particular news item is covered, but what news they consider important. What a great selection of online radio stations there are now – in any language, and for every taste!
Learning foreign languages expands your horizons
Learn languages for all the fresh opportunities that you have — and that you can't even imagine yet. If you feel that you want to change something in your life, but do not know how to do it, just start doing something new for yourself. If you're going to go somewhere, the crucial thing is just to walk along the road. It is possible that eventually, you will not be where you imagined. This is not awful news. Likely, the unknown destination will also be an excellent option. With language learning, this works 100%. Just start teaching them, put your heart into them, don't stop when something goes wrong, and new horizons — including those you didn't know about before – will open up.
Conclusion
Thanks to the Internet, it has never been easier to master a foreign language. Just use the world wide web, find tutors and schedule classes according to a convenient schedule, and instructors will provide everything you need for successful learning. Keep in mind that the journey is long, so it will take a lot of practice, patience, and dedication to achieve meaningful results. Such secondary effects of knowing a new language as being inspiring and erudite are also appealing, aren't they?
